Mystic Code Review

mc10

Note: Since this app doesn’t do the usual route per character, I’ll be reviewing the app overall. Though, I won’t do spoilers!

Mystic Code is a detective, murder mystery, supernatural otome(?). I put in a (?) because I believe this is more visual novel than an otome as there’s no real focus on romance in the story. Maybe an occasional feeling shy or blush but it doesn’t have much otome qualities. But I could be wrong _(:3 」∠)_

There is a lot I rather not reveal. The murder-mystery and lore of Mystics is interesting to learn as you read without knowing what to expect. I will say that Mystics are a supernatural group that have a human appearance but possess animal and plant-like abilities. Humans and Mystics coexist, so it’s not like Mystics live in the shadows. You’ll meet a variety of Mystic (and a couple of humans) characters and understand how mystic’s powers work. Even murders are different depending if the victim is a Mystic or human. So make sure you gather as much clues as you can ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ! The first case you’ll get to is the murder of a Mystic cop. It can get a little confusing, but you’ll start to piece things together as you move on.

It is possible to collect all the endings and extras for free, but it will take a lot of time. I’ve had this app for more than a few months and I still have a few endings left to unlock and a bunch of extras to collect. Be sure to take any opportunity the app gives for clovers, the game’s currency. This app is actually very generous with the clovers than just 5 ads per day! There are also keys, used to get clues. I have not seen any other use for it aside from clues and I have not seen much of a difference when you collect the clues with keys. Though, it’s still nice to get.

While you can’t romance any of the characters in the main story, they are still strong characters. The interactions they have does feel like they’re close and on the same level of respect. The main focus are solving the murder cases and bonding with the characters and/or getting to know them.

Honestly, Eliot’s my fav (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

The Good

  1. Multiple Endings

There are sooo many endings to unlock. It’s what keeps me replaying the story. Bad endings are very easy to get and very quick. When you get a bad ending, you use a heart to start from the beginning to wherever you were rather than from the beginning of the game. Normal and good endings are the important ones to get and after you view them, you start from the beginning of the game. As long as the story has kept your attention, collecting the endings and trying different choices feels fulfilling and fun.

2. The MC

In terms of mobile otome MCs, this MC was very refreshing. She’s cool-headed, has that big sister- like personality, cunning, and holds her ground. This is one of the more mature MCs I don’t often see in most otome in general. Which I hope to see in more otome! It does give a different experience when reading, at least for me that is.

3. The Characters

The characters are the strongest part of this app. While you can’t exactly romance them in the main story (*sigh* Eliot), there are the extras where you can somewhat spend more time with them outside the story. Whether we can’t romance them or not, the game gave us enjoyable characters to spend time with in the story. One of them has to stick out to you after you finish the story at least with their diverse personalities!

4. The Story

Just like the characters, the story was also another strong point of this game. I will admit, it starts out a bit slow, so I can imagine some players tuning out. Even though, detective/ mystery type stories are one of my favorites. Though, I will say it does get more interesting as you learn the Mystics lore and murder mysteries. But I will say that this may not be for everyone if they aren’t into detective type stories as it’s very story heavy. There are some supernatural elements to give it a different feel, which kept my attention.

5. Generous

As I’ve mentioned, this app is very generous with giving out the currencies. There are many chances in getting clovers, so saving up doesn’t take too long compared to the other LucyDream apps.

The Bad

  1. The Art

The art isn’t bad, I actually like it, but it can be hit-or-miss with others. While some characters look great (MC, Justin, Christopher, William), others… not so much. One character I particularly have in mind is Leona. This is gonna sound cruel of me, but man Leona is just hard to look at for me. Why does she look like a corpse? And it took me a little while to realize Leona is a woman too (¯ . ¯;) Leona is sweet and enjoy her as a character, but I just don’t find her design appealing. Again, the art isn’t bad, but it can be unappealing for others.

2. Paid Choices

Some paid choices feel too short. Like I’ve spent 150 clovers on a certain important choice and it ended a lot quicker than I thought. Though, this is a small gripe, like the art issue. If they weren’t generous with their clovers, I would be more frustrated ( ̄︿ ̄)

3. Takes Time

Since there is a good amount of content, it can take awhile to collect and unlock. There are times where I take a hiatus from reading the story so it won’t feel repetitive. So, I would login the app just to collect clovers. While I still have yet to 100% collect/unlock everything, I’ll still keep the app since I do love this app. I can imagine some not wanting to wait that long or running out of space, so they would delete the app. So this all depends on how much you enjoy the app and patience.

***

I’d say this is a great app! The Bad points I listed are mostly small gripes for me, but I can imagine it being an issue for others. If you’re planning on trying this app, hoping to romance one of the characters or any romantic moments, then you might be disappointed. I would download this app if you want a break from romance-heavy otome, but still want to be the MC surrounded by attractive people (─‿‿─) or read something a bit more serious. I’m still keeping this app until I can collect the endings, extras, and clues!
